When trying to restore a document from SharePoint 2013 DPM starts the recovery prosess but failed with error:

object reference not set to an instance of an object..(ID 32017 Details: invalid pointer(0x80004003))

We have 2 Web Front End servers running Server 2012 Standard and 2 SQL servers running om Server 2012.

ConfigureSharePoint -EnableSharePointProtection are run only on one of the WFE servers.

Backup jobs seems OK but when trying to run a recovery of one document using "Recover without using a recovery farm" it fail.

I can see the .mdf and .ldf files in the folder I set for temp recovery.

Problem with backup of different Sharepoint farm with same DPM2012SP1 server

Hello,

I have problem with backup of different Sharepoint farm with same DPM2012SP1 server.

My configuration:
All servers is same Active directory domain - W2k3 native

Backup server: DPM2012SP1 on Windows 2012 - build of DPM is 4.1.3415.0

The first sharepoint farm:
sharepoint server: SP1 server = W2k12, SharePoint 2013
Sharepoint's DBs are on database server SQL1 - W2k12, SQL2012
Sharepoint's config database use SQL instance with name MSSQLSEVER and by SQL server client network utility is created alias where MSSQLSERVER instance is redirected to SHAREPOINT1 instance which is configured on SQL1 server.

The second sharepoint farm:
sharepoint server: SP2 server = W2k12, SharePoint 2013
Sharepoint's DBs are on database server SQL2 - W2k12, SQL2012
Sharepoint's config database use SQL instanci with name MSSQLSEVER and by SQL server client network utility is created alias where MSSQLSERVER instance is redirected to SHAREPOINT2 instance which is configured on SQL2 server.

Config database of both SharePoint farm use same name.
Note: Name of these servers are devised for better understanding.

Problem:
I can create the protection group for the first sharepoint farm SP1 without problem, but when I want to create the second protection group for sharepoint farm SP2 - I can not do it.
And when I create the protection for the second sharepoint farm SP2 without problem, I can not create the second protection group for sharepoint farm SP1.
I think that problem is that the both configuration database of sharepoint farms use the same of SQL instance name and DPM agent/server did not look to SQL Client network utility for SQL instance redirection.

note: using the same SQL instance in sharepoint's configuration database is that this Sharepoint's farms was migrated to other SQL server. As I know - change of SQL instance in sharepoint's configuration database  is not possible.

I search on the web and I found similar problem described there: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/8266ea77-4250-457b-88ec-97c792431856/protecting-two-sharepoint-farms

Have you any ideas how can I create the second protection group for my configuration?
Exist any solution for this case? In my opinion there are many customers with same configuration as me.

Thank you for your help.

Backing up Sharepoint2010 using DPM agent

Hi,

I've installed DPM on a server (SERVER4) and installed an agent on another server (SERVER2) containing our Sharepoint2010 deployment (single server farm).  I have run ConfigureSharepoint.exe on the agent server.  When I create a DPM protection group I can now see a SharePoint object to protect on SERVER2 but when I expand the object to select the farm all I see is the _Config  database object and if I select this to protect I get the following error:

One or more prerequisites for protecting this data source are missing.
Ensure that the following prerequisite software is installed on SERVER2.sbm.local, the front-end web servers and all of the back-end computers running SQL Server  (including all cluster nodes and mirror partner nodes):

All Front-end Web servers:
Windows Server 2008 x64

All Back-end computers running SQL Server:
Windows Server 2003 SP1 with Knowledge Base article 940349

Windows Server 2008

All Front-end Web servers:

I can't understand why this error is occurring as SERVER2 is running Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit with SQL Server 2008 R2.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

New-DPMSearchOption crashes Powershell

Hi,

I want to restore a single item in SharePoint. The powershell command "New-DPMSearchOption" offers the variable "SeachDetail". There I am able to use "WssDocuments" as input. When using the "New.DPMSearchOption" my powershell allways crashes. I tried to use the variable "FilesFolders" for "SearchDetail" but this has the same effect.

Anyone used this command successfully or knows why the powershell crashes?

Thanks.

SharePoint ILR - WSS3.0

I have been trying to recover a single file from a WSS3.0 of SharePoint with DPM 2012 SP1 UR3 installed which returns the following error:

DPM Agent on the SharePoint front-end Web server is not configured appropriately. DPM was unable to invoke WssCmdletWrapper DCOM component successfully. (ID 32019 Details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057))

with the following remedy:
Recommended action: 1) If your farm administrator password has expired, please run "ConfigureSharePoint.exe -EnableSharePointProtection" on the front-end web server. This will reset the WssCmdletWrapper and update its logon credentials.
 2) If you are protecting SharePoint Search, then run "ConfigureSharePoint.exe -EnableSPSearchProtection" as well on the front-end web server.

The setup is quite basic:

2003 server with WSS3.0 with the SQL on a separate 2008 R2 server with SQL 2008 R2

The Farm administrator password has not been changed, I have gone through this more then once... My domain account is a farm admin but running the above commands would result in Access Denied, once I logged with "the Farm Admin" account on the Web server and run it would work?

one other thing I found strange when you kick of the wizard to recover the item the first option is to browse for the WebFront-end... the only server available is the SQL server & not the WebFront-End?

SharePoint backup frequency?

Does DPM 2012 support 15 minute incremental backups of SharePoint when backing up as a SP farm or only Express Full? When creating the protection group there is only the option for Express Full. The SharePoint SQL DB recovery models are set to FULL. Would expect it to do 15 minute incremental as this is what we can do with SQL.

Many thanks,

Marcus

DPM 2012 SP1 & SharePoint 2013 item level backup

$

I'm running DPM 2012 SP1 with the latest updates. I backup two separate SharePoint farms: a 2010 farm and a new 2013 far.
On the 2010 farm I have always been able to drill down to the file level when going in the recovery tab of DPM, but on the 2013 farm I cannot drill down from the top content DBs.

I deployed the agent on both 2013 FE and SQL servers and on the FE I ran the ConfigureSharePoint CMDLET with the switch -EnableSharePointProtection without problems. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Tahnks.

DPM 2010 (Domain A), Sharepoint 2010 (Domain A), SQL Server 2008 R2 (Domain B): Protection Group Problem SQL named is in wrong domain format.

Good Evening,

So I have 3 Servers in all, with the following configurations:

Server1: DPM2010.contoso.com (Domain A)

Server2: Sharepoint2010WFE.contoso.com (Domain A)

Server3: Sharepoint2010DB.contoso.net (Domain B)

I have prepared sharepoint2010wfe.contoso.com appropriatly by installing the DPM Agent, running configuresharepoint.exe -enablesharepointprotection & ConfigureSharepoint.exe enableSPSearchProtection.

I have prepared Sharepoint2010db.contoso.net by installing the DPM agent to the server using the manual installation method and creating local user credentials and connecting to the agent through install > attach agent.

In DPM all of agents are healthy so I go over to create the protection profile and I recieve the following error: DPM cannot protect your windows sharepoint services farm until you install agents on the following server: Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com (ID: 956)

I have already attempted creating an alias on the WFE server for Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com and have it point to Sharepoint2010DB.contoso.net but this did not resolve my issue at all.

Also please keep in mind that pinging Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com is invalid as there is not a valid DNS entry of any kind, Im not even sure where this name is coming from other than some sort of a mashup. Also I am unable to domain join the SQL server to contoso.com because of licensing costs.

A resolution to this issue woudl be greatly appreciated.

Backup a SharePoint 2010 Farm using DPM 2012 SP1 and SQL DNS Alias

$

Hi,

We have a 11 SharePoint servers farm we want to backup:
2 CA's, 3 WFE (Anon), 3 WFE (Edit) and 1 WFE for scanning to a cloud (in case of hackers attack) (fast 4 SharePoint is our search engine). 1 SQL Server (ent) Cluster (2 servers).

Because of Information Security and some other reasons (the subnet that the original name resides in is blocked from the farms location), the SQL Cluster uses a DNS Alias (instead of SQL Alias) to use a different subnet than the original name has.
I know that with DPM 2010 it wasn't possible to backup using an SQL DNS Alias, but im not sure about 2012 sp1.

After i configured the servers with all the prerequisites for sharepoint content backup to work, i tried to configure the backup of the farm through the management console and it tells me that "DPM cannot protect some of your datasources until you install agents on the following servers: SQLserver.mycompany.com (ID: 956).

ofcourse the agent is well configured on the SQL Cluster with all the right rights.
If i configure an SQL Alias on the WFE's, it can connect to the database through the farm but then users get "Cannot connect to content database" because of the mixture of DNS and SQL Alias.

so... does anyone knows if DPM 2012 somehow supports SQL DNS Alias or just SQL Alias?
does anyone thinks of a solution for this problem?

if you need any more information ill do my best to deliver it.

thank you very much,

Guy

Sharepoint 2010 backup failed with 0x800423F4

Hi,

We are taking backup of SharePoint 2010 with DPM 2012 SP1.

The daily recovery points failed of SharePoint with error.

The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError: The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried, The error is likely to reoccur.  (0x800423F4)

I have restarted “SQL VSS Writer service” on SQL server where the SharePoint databases is hosted.

And sometimes I get Last error: No error , and sometimes get Last error: Non-retryable in 'SqlServerWriter”. When run “vssadmin list writers” on SQL server. But still the backup failed even if all VSS writers are stable on SQL server.

I have check event log on SQL server during the backup failed and get following errorError message: Database 'RollbackSnapshotTempDB{3AEDCB94-0E03-412E-BD48-60C82192CE6B}' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.”

Its really difficult to find wheather its DPM, SQL or SharePoint error,

Any help would be highly appreciated.

sharepoint protection using MS DPM

hi all,

I have some basic questions about protecting our intranet site running SharePoint services in VM on hyper-V cluster host.

In order to protect VM internal applications, do I need to install agent on hyper-V host also or only in hyper-V VM.

and If I need to protect entire VM then I need to install agent on hyper-V host right. or in this case also I need to install agent on hyper-V VM?

I have All DPM documentation but there is some confusion.

Sharepoint Recovery of Document fails with DPM ; Exception Message : Source URL is absent

Hi

I am using DPM 2012 SP1 to protect Sharepoint 2013.

The protection group is created and works fine.

I am trying to recover a document from the DPM and it is failing. I am using recovering to the orignal site and recovering without using a recovery farm.

The error that I get is: DPM was unable to export item XXXXX from the content database XXXXXX . Exception message = Source URL is Absent.(ID 32017)

From the WssCmdletsWrapperCurr.errlog i see that it could successfully add UnAttachedContentDatabase.

DPM 2012 Sharepoint Protection - cross forest domain issues

$

Hi,

I've just upgraded to DPM 2012 this week and i'm trying to implement Sharepoint Protection for multiple cross-forest domain Front-Ends. I've done the following, without any luck. When i go to create a new protection group, sharepoint farm protection isnt available as one of the options.

- insured DPM agent is install on all servers in environment

- logged in as farm admin account and ran command: configuresharepoint.exe -enablesharepointprotection. It comes back as operation completed successfully.

- insured VSS writer is only running on one Front End

- ran sysadm -o unregisterwsswriter and registerwsswriter and both come back successful.

I've tried this on multiple environments with the same results. Not sure where to go from now. Anyone experience this before? Is it an issue with the front ends being on a seperate domain from the DPM server?
