Back up and restore SharePoint 2013 with DPM 2012

I'm working on a SharePoint 2013 farm with 4+ web/app servers (VMware virtualised) and physical SQL Server 2012 database server with 3TBs of content

If one of the virtual servers becomes corrupted (OS) can I use DPM to recover this server from backup (bare metal restore) or can I only restore the whole farm in its entirety

Also can I backup/restore only the SharePoint  farm configuration part (config database, iis) - or is a full farm restore the only option to recover from farm/config database corruption?

I have DPM 2012 SP1 Rollup2 and I wanted to recover Sharepoint 2013 Site (Single Sharepoint Server with SQL 2012 SP1 Database).

I get this error:

DPM was unable to query the unattached content database SHAREPOINT\SharePoint1. Exception Message = Login failed for user 'C\spAdmin'.. (ID 32018 Details: Unknown error (0x80131904) (0x80131904)).

C\spAdmin user is sysadmin on Sharepoint SQL Database.....

I don't know what is wrong?

Thanks for help in advance!

I am having trouble With single item recovery on the wss_content_db on my SharePoint 2013 server

Error Message "DPM failed to gather item level catalog for 1 database(s) of the SharePoint Farm Sharepoint Farm\<SPserver>\SharePoint\SharePoint_Config on <SPserver>.mc.local. Some of the recovery points for these databases in the farm would be associated with an earlier successful catalog. (ID 3133)"

My Mysite_db this is working.

Event log says:

Backup job for datasource: server\SHAREPOINT\SharePoint_Config on production server: server.domain completed succcessfully.

Restore several sharepoint items from the same database

$

Hi all,

When not able to use Optimize Item Level Recovery, and after selecting the target SQL Server and SharePoint WFE and stage locations (which takes very very long, about 10 minutes in our case) DPM transfers the whole content database to the target SQL server as the first stage to item level recovery. If the content database is big (several Gb), the whole process of "preparing the restoration" becomes quite time consuming, for the volume of data that is definitely recovered (say a single document, or a list).

In the event of needing to restore several items, you need to repeat all common steps (staging locations and database transfers) as you cannot select several sharepoint items for recovery in a single operation. this leads to a multiplied operation time, as well as retransferring the same content database over the network again and again).

Is there a way to avoid repeating some of the mentioned operations (selecting the stage areas on sql and wfe, or re-transferring the whole content database), or speeding up some of the stages (for us, selecting target sql isntance and staging area + selecting wfe and staging area takes about 10 minutes)?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Roberto

I'm currently backing up Sharepoint 2013 with DPM 2012 R2.

It is only showing 5 of my 8 content db's.

the new content db's have been added to the farm since the protection group was created.

Any idea how get dpm to see the new db's?

DPM 2012 Protecting SharePoint 2007

Hello,

I need to protect a SharePoint 2007 SP2 setup for a short period.

I checked this technet article configuring the front-end web server and it only states that i need a KB941422, but it's not SharePoint 2007 SP2, so i proceeded with normal configuresharepoint etc. and it all went well.

SharePoint farm version 12.0.0.6656

Windows 2003 R2 x64 SP2

SQL 2005 SP3 9.0.4035

SQL 2008 10.0.2531

DPM 2012 SP1 4.1.3417.0

SQL Alias is not used. But vshadow cannot run on the server so that may be a clue, but i'm not sure, it says it could not locate something in VSSAPI.DLL (Version 5.3.3790.3959)

But when i create a new protection group and i try check the SharePoint farm i get the following error:

SharePoint ILR - WSS3.0

I have been trying to recover a single file from a WSS3.0 of SharePoint with DPM 2012 SP1 UR3 installed which returns the following error:

DPM Agent on the SharePoint front-end Web server is not configured appropriately. DPM was unable to invoke WssCmdletWrapper DCOM component successfully. (ID 32019 Details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057))

with the following remedy:
Recommended action: 1) If your farm administrator password has expired, please run "ConfigureSharePoint.exe -EnableSharePointProtection" on the front-end web server. This will reset the WssCmdletWrapper and update its logon credentials.
 2) If you are protecting SharePoint Search, then run "ConfigureSharePoint.exe -EnableSPSearchProtection" as well on the front-end web server.

The setup is quite basic:

2003 server with WSS3.0 with the SQL on a separate 2008 R2 server with SQL 2008 R2

The Farm administrator password has not been changed, I have gone through this more then once... My domain account is a farm admin but running the above commands would result in Access Denied, once I logged with "the Farm Admin" account on the Web server and run it would work?

one other thing I found strange when you kick of the wizard to recover the item the first option is to browse for the WebFront-end... the only server available is the SQL server & not the WebFront-End?

Item level recovery fails - unable to create database

I am trying to recover a file from a Sharepoint 2013 Farm without using a recovery farm.

I can see the file in DPM.

I have set the recovery to go to a different SQL instance than the production farm which has nothing but the system databases created on it plus a database called TMPRecover. I have granted the Network Service account DBCreator and Sysadmin roles as well as dbowner and dbsecurityadmin roles for the master database and the TMPRecover database.

I am selecting this as the instance to attach to when specifying the temporary server.

The recovery seems to start OK but then fails with the error below. Not sure where else to be looking to get this to work.

Affected area: Sharepoint Farm\SPSQL\SharePoint_Config
Occurred since: 09/01/2014 19:05:20
Description: The recovery jobs for SharePoint Farm Sharepoint Farm\SPSQL\SharePoint_Config that started at 09 January 2014 19:01:55, with the destination of gallow-sp01.gallowglass.local, have completed. Most or all jobs failed to recover the requested data. (ID 3111)
DPM was unable to attach the database to the SQL Instance NAVTMPSQL. CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'. (ID 32000 Details: Unknown error (0x80040e14) (0x80040E14))
 More information
Recommended action: 1) Check to see that the specified instance of SQL Server is online.
2) If your SQL database files do not have the .mdf, .ndf, and .ldf extensions for the primary data file, secondary data file, and log file, respectively, then DPM will not be able to attach the database to the specified SQL Instance.
On the Jobs tab in the Monitoring tasks area, group jobs by type to view details of the recovery jobs.
 Retry the recovery job...

DPM could not enumerate SharePoint datasources on the protected computer X. (ID: 967)

Hi,

I'm trying to backup a sharepoint 2010 single server but receives the error: "DPM could not enumerate SharePoint datasources on the protected computer X. (ID: 967)"

I'm using DPM 2012 SP1

* I've installed the DPM agent on both the SP server and the SQL server.
* I've run the command: configuresharepoint -enablesharepointprotection on the SP server from an elevated prompt with success.
* The DPM account is a member of the "farm administrators" on the SP server and is a local admin on the SP server

Tnx

Johan

Restore SharePoint contents across farms with DPM

Hi,

We have DPM protecting two farms (staging and production). We want to restore a site collection of the production farm into the staging farm, with DPM. Is this possible?

I've tried to specify "recover content to an alternate location" but in the end the UI does not let me choose a different WFE other than the one of the original farm.

I've seen other posts regarding this issue but without a clear answer. Have someone did this? how?

DPM 2012SP1 and SharePoint 2010.

Thanks in advance.

Excluding specific web application from DPM 2012 SharePoint farm backup

$

Hi,

I've created a protection group in DPM 2012 to protect our SharePoint 2010 farm.
This farm has 10 web applications, which one of them is a web archive that holds more than 1.5TB of PDF files.

For that reason i wanted to backup all farm web applications and exclude this specific webapplicationbecause we dont need a backup of these files and it will majorly impact my replica creation and consistency checks times (not even mentioning the storage space needed for that).

I can't seem to find a way to specify which database\web application\site i would like to backup.
I've been searching the net for a solution for this through UI or Powershell but came back with nothing.

I want to backup the SharePoint farm to get item level recovery and backup my config and admin databases as this is the only way to do this.

Does anyone have any idea how should i solve this issue?

Thanks,
Guy

DPM and SharePoint Item Restore Restored Item is not the same

$

I want to be sure that my expectation of DPM is correct for SharePoint Item Restoration. If I create a restore point a week ago and it includes documents and list items from a site. Those items will contain the Created dates in the past and the Created By and Modified By of the original user.

Now, a week later, if I restore one of those items, it has a Modified date of today and a Modified By of the System.

Is this the expected behavior? It seems that this is not a perfect solution because the item is not the same as it was when it was backed up. From an audit perspective I have lost my audit trail.

Does it restore the versions of items when the item is restored?

Please tell me I have something misconfigured, this is my first stab at working with DPM 2012 and SharePoint 2013. I have not found any definitive installation instructions on TechNet.

I'd love for this to be a solution for my clients.

Thanks!

Removed SP Content DB and then i get Database auto-protection failed

Hello,

I keep getting an Critical error from the Database Auto-Protection Failed.

It started when we removed a content DB from a SharePoint 2010 farm. I have double checked that nothing is referring that database any more.

I tried to re-configure the particular SharePoint protection group, and I tried to run the autoprotectinstances.ps1 but that alert comes everyday.

Description from DPM:

One or more databases could not be protected automatically because auto-protection failed. If the databases belong to a SharePoint farm, then the farm recovery points will continue to get created without these databases. (ID 32511)

Hi everyone,

Am running SharePoint 2013 (with SQL 2012) on server 2008 R2 SP1 which i've already installed the DPM agent, when i go to DPM 2012 SP1 server and run the command below i get an error.

PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\bin> ConfigureSharepoint.exe -enablesharepointprotection
Enter the user name for 'WSSCmdletsWrapper': contoso\spfarm
Enter the password for WSSCmdletsWrapper:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

An error occurred while trying to start the Sharepoint Vss Writer.

I've tried solutions below but it doesnt seem to succeed even after restart.

1. Added SPFarm to the localadmins of SharePoint server.

2. Logged into the SharePoint as SPFarm, run this Stsadm.exe -o registerwsswriter command from SharePoint shell, confirmed the VSS server is started and running with contoso\spfarm account and restarted the server.

3. After reboot I was still getting the error above from DPM, I added SPFarm account as sysadmin to SQL roles on SharePoint server and tried to configure SharePoint but the error still persisted.

Kindly assist.
